WHO WE ARE

  • Who We Are

    Stewards of the Allegheny Trail

Build, maintain, protect, preserve & partner

  • WVSTA MISSION

In partnership and cooperation with landowners, managers, and others, we serve the outdoor community by building and maintaining the Allegheny Trail and other trails.

We maintain, preserve, protect, and promote this challenging and scenic foot trail (that will exceed 300 miles) running southward from the Mason-Dixon Line through WV and VA to the Appalachian Trail.

By our stewardship we further the conservation of wild pristine lands and wildlife and protect areas of natural beauty and historic interest.

  • A VISION OF THE ALLEGHENY TRAIL

Imagine a 320-mile-long uninterrupted hiking trail from the Mason-Dixon Line to the Appalachian Trail in Virginia. Linking points of natural beauty, cultural, economic and historical significance as it meanders through many counties in Virginia and West Virginia. Traversing unspoiled wilderness and connecting many historic towns, national forests, state forests, and state parks.

A trail with a permanent protected route, off the roads and into the woods.

A trail with the facilities to support day, section, and thru-hikers. Frequented by local hikers and guests from across the nation. A trail that is a destination hike for the backpackers and adventurer. A trail that provides access to the unique geography and diverse wildlife of the Allegheny Mountains.

A trail under the stewardship and management of the WVSTA & its partners.

  • GOALS AND TASKS

Long-term goals are efforts critical to our mission. In our case the long-term goals and our mission are continuous in nature.

Strategic planning goals are steps toward the long-term goals to be accomplished during the term of the strategic plan. These goals are the association’s plan to meet its long-term goals. The current strategic planning process is for a 5-year period (2021-2026). It is a living document constantly under review.

Short term goals are portions of the strategic planning goals we believe can be accomplished within the next 12-18 months.

Tasks are building blocks for the achievement of our short-term goals. Tasks are not goals, but rather steppingstones toward the goals. Tasks are added for each goal when needed and subtracted when complete.

For detailed information pertaining to WVSTA goals and tasks, see our Strategic Plan Document below.
