OUR MISSION

The mission of the West Virginia Scenic Trails Association is to serve the outdoor community by building and maintaining the Allegheny Trail and other trails.

We maintain, preserve, protect, and promote this challenging and scenic foot trail.

By our stewardship we further the conservation of wild pristine lands and wildlife and protect areas of natural beauty and historic interest.

Join us to celebrate 50 years of creating and maintaining the ALT.

WHO WE ARE

TRAILS

  • The Allegheny Trail

The Allegheny Trail (The ALT), a 311-mile north-south trail, is West Virginia’s longest hiking trail.

Its northern terminus is on the Mason-Dixon Line at the Pennsylvania-West Virginia border near Bruceton Mills.

The ALT wends its way south until it meets the Appalachian Trail on Peters Mountain at the Virginia-West Virginia border.

  • Mary Draper Ingles Trail (MDIT)

The Mary Ingles Trail Blazers Chapter of the West Virginia Scenic Trails Association was formed in 1989 with the goal to develop and maintain the Mary Draper Ingles Trail (MDIT) and other trails in and around the West Virginia portion of the historic trek (made in 1755) of pioneer woman Mary Draper Ingles.

The group also works to promote an interest in hiking and an appreciation of the out-of-doors.

  • Great Eastern Trail

The Great Eastern Trail (GET) will provide a 2000 mile hiking experience in the western Appalachian Mountains. It will connect pre-existing trails (like the Mary Ingles, Allegheny, Tuscarora, and Appalachian Trails in WV) and existing outdoor recreation areas from Alabama to New York. This mighty trail will cross seven counties in West Virginia; Mingo, Wyoming, Mercer, Raleigh, Summers, Monroe, & Greenbrier.

The GET Committee of the WVSTA was formed in 2009, and is focused on developing the GET segments in WV.
