WEST VIRGINIA SCENIC TRAILS ASSOCIATION

INFORMATIONAL MEETING

The WVSTA in cooperation with the WV Division of

Natural Resources would like to invite hikers and trail

enthusiasts to come out and learn about the Allegheny Trail,

West Virginia’s longest distance hiking trail.

The Allegheny Trail is over 300 miles long following the

Allegheny Highlands of the two Virginia’s beginning at the

Mason Dixon line in Preston County WV in the north to

Monroe County WV in the south where it joins the

Appalachian Trail. The trail passes through four state parks,

two state forests, and three national forests over its course

with shelters and scenic locations scattered throughout.

The WVSTA is a nonprofit volunteer organization that

exists primarily for the building and maintaining of the

Allegheny trail along with numerous other hiking trails in

WV and we encourage any group or individual to join us on

our trail building, maintenance, or social events.

So, if you are looking for a great hike through a diversity of

woodland settings in the beautiful Allegheny Highlands let

this be your first stop.

Light refreshments will be served.

                                                        TREK Weekend 2018

Save the Date: Columbus Day Weekend October 5-8

Has anyone ever said to you to go take a hike? Perhaps not but today the West Virginia Scenic Trails Association is offering you that opportunity in one of the most scenic areas of West Virginia. This year TREK weekend will be based out of Watoga state park with a new format. Hikers will now have the choice of our usual long distance 25 mile backpacking experience along the Allegheny Trail or taking shorter less strenuous day hikes in or near Watoga and returning to the park each evening. Both hiking groups will be lead and fully supported by WVSTA volunteers during their hikes.

Watoga state park and this new format were chosen for TREK 2018 for a variety of reasons. Watoga has been both a friend and supporter of the WVSTA for many years, and one of if not the finest of all the state parks in WV with the Allegheny trail passing directly through the park. By offering hikers the conveniences and amenities of staying in this beautiful park (if they choose) we hope to make TREK weekend something more appealing to all age groups and hiking abilities. For more information about Watoga and to make reservations visit www.wvstateparks.com with a little heads up that cabins fill quickly so don’t hesitate to make reservations.

October seems like a long way off now but before you know it the green leaves of summer will be changing to the reds and yellows of fall and what better way to enjoy them than hiking in the mountains of Pocahontas County, WV. Hope to see you there.
